2019 Arts in Black Festival

The Arts in Black Festival is just one of the many events sponsored by PLIGHT (Proud Loving Individuals Giving a Hand to Teens) Inc. A local organization committed to offering activities that enrich and help shape the minds of youth, thereby creating positive, productive lives, continues to be active in the community since its start in 1988.

The Festival weekend will kick-off with a talent show on Friday, May 3 at 7:00 p.m. at the Tift Theatre for the Performing Arts.  The talent show will feature performances from students ranging in age from elementary school age to college age. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded.

Vivian Hightower, who is chairperson of the talent show this year, said there will be lots of new talent and an array of performances and entertainment.  She also said that the last rehearsal will be Friday Apr. 26 at 6 p.m. at the community center on South Central Avenue.  Admission will be $7 per person.

A full day is scheduled for Saturday, May 4 in Fulwood Park.  The festival will open with welcomes from both a City and County Official followed by:

 

            10:15 a.m.      Poetry Competition featuring approximately 25 students from preschool age up through high school age reciting both original and learned poems.

            11:00 a.m.      Soweto Street Beat a South African world dance theater company based in Atlanta, Georgia and Soweto, South Africa. Soweto Street Beat is the only professional South African dance and music company in the United States

 

            11:30 am.       Announcing of the Poetry Competition Winners

            12noon           Justice & Kwade

            1:00 p.m.        Essence Band of Albany, Georgia

            3:00 p.m.        Soweto Street Beat

            4:00 p.m.        Harold E. Thomas & Danger Zone of Macon, Ga.

 We are asking participation from the entire Community as this is a Family-packed event for everyone.  Additionally there will be vendors from around the area selling food and crafts and lots of fun activities for the Kids!
